Dig and Survive Day Night Cycle: Phases and Transitions Explained
How day and night phases work in Dig and Survive, how to recognize a phase transition, and what the in-game countdown tells you — plus how to skip a day.
Dig and Survive runs a repeating two-phase cycle. During the day you dig for materials, sell loot at the pawn shop, buy from vendor stalls, and prepare the base — crafting defenses and fueling the generator. At night the phase flips to survival: zombies spawn and attack, and digging is not possible. One player tested this directly, confirming right after nightfall that mining is impossible once fast and white zombie variants start chasing. The core loop is to spend the day digging and earning money, then deal with zombie attacks at night — ideally killing them near the base so corpses can be compressed into fuel.
How to recognize a phase transition
- On-screen countdown: the interface counts down remaining phase time in seconds — for example, "night ends in 40 seconds" shortly after nightfall, and "night ends in 99" while awaiting a rescue event. This is the clearest indicator of when the current phase will flip.
- Hostile activity: when night begins, zombies (fast zombies, white zombies, and stronger variants on later nights) spawn and chase the player. Their appearance confirms the phase changed.
- Day number tracking: the game tracks the cycle by day number (e.g., "it's day 10"), and scheduled night events are announced in advance, such as "there's a mini boss, attacks tonight."
- NPC dialogue: quest NPCs reference the phase directly — a radio contact says "radio dice during the day messes with the signal, come back when it's dark," confirming day and night are distinct states with gameplay consequences.
Skipping and influencing the cycle
You can shorten the day manually: hold H to skip day, which advances the cycle to the next phase transition. Night, by contrast, must be survived in real time (with the countdown visible) or endured until it ends. Nights escalate — after one night ends, the zombies have grown stronger.
What is and isn't confirmed about timing
- Confirmed: nights end on a visible seconds countdown, so the game exposes remaining phase time in real numbers you can read at any moment.
- Confirmed: the game displays the day count, and a story milestone requires surviving until day 5, with further multi-day waits later.
- Not confirmed: the exact total length of a full day or full night phase. Countdown readings observed so far are partial snapshots taken at arbitrary moments, so don't treat any of them as a fixed phase length — check your own countdown in-game, since timing may vary by day number or events in progress.
Using the cycle to plan
- When day begins: dig, sell loot at the pawn shop, restock at vendor stalls, and craft defenses while fueling the generator before nightfall.
- When night begins: stop digging — it's disabled — and prepare for zombie waves; if an event like a mini boss attack was announced during the day, expect it that night.
- Between phases: use the countdown and day number to decide whether to keep preparing or skip ahead — holding H during the day gets you straight to the next night, while nights must play out in real time.
