Dig and Survive Day 50: How to Reach the 50-Day Survival Milestone
A researched endurance plan for surviving 50 days in Dig and Survive: how days are counted, verified run checkpoints, and what the day-50 milestone actually proves.
Reaching day 50 in Dig and Survive is an endurance milestone measured purely by the day counter — it is the stated requirement for the Survivor badge, but nothing indicates a story event, ending, or win condition at day 50. The documented story concludes around day 16–17 with the helicopter rescue, and the game explicitly lets you decline it ("You will still be able to start this ending later on if you press no"), so your run can continue past the story without ending. Plan for a long, compounding cycle of daytime digging and nighttime defense, not a scripted finale.
How days are counted and skipped
Days pass through a repeating day/night cycle: zombies attack at night, while daytime is for digging, selling scrap, and buying from vendor stalls. Holding H skips a day — this is how long runs advance quickly. Gameplay shows players skipping days repeatedly, including finishing night three early and skipping ahead while waiting on NPC quest timers like "come back in one day" and "come back in two days." The day counter tracks continuously; one playthrough was at day 16 by the late radio-quest stage.
Early-run checkpoints
- Tutorial: pick up zombies and compress them into fuel, fuel the generator, drill for scrap, and convert scrap into money at the workbench.
- Buy a bear trap blueprint and place it. Note that disassembling a placed bear trap consumes it permanently.
- Buy a bat ($5) and wood boards. Early vendor stock includes sheet metal and other basics.
- First story gate: a phone caller says "Survive till day five, then I'll call you back" — day 5 is a documented early milestone before the escape storyline opens. These stage day numbers come from one playthrough and may vary in your run.
- Craftable defenses at the workbench include barbed wire, bear trap, empty turret, metal wall, spike wall, auto turret, and land mines. Early crafting can feel weak, but its value grows — later quest steps and defense depend on it.
- Fuel is a recurring constraint: the generator gates base access and runs out. Splitting zombie corpses into multiple smaller fuel units stretches supply; golden fuel gives 500 fuel.
Mid-run progression observed by day 16
- Around day 10, a mini boss attacks at night. Killing it unlocks the auto turret blueprint (10 scraps). The auto turret holds limited ammo (24) and reloads on its own.
- Survivor supply quests: a fellow survivor asks for three melee weapons (three swords, limited to three in inventory at once), then four medkits, with multi-day waits between requests.
- Radio quest: start the signal at night (signal interference "during the day"), survive the horde while it sends, then the rescuer arrives and a second, stronger radio must be built — "come back in 3 days."
- Rescue decision: calling for rescue starts the helicopter ending, but you can decline and start it later. To pursue day 50, decline or defer it.
- By the rescue window (around day 16–17), swells become extreme ("like 700 zombies on me"), a final boss appears during the wait, revives have tiers, and weapons can be lost on death.
Long-run preparation for an endurance attempt
Zombies "get infinitely strong" each night, so a run sustained well past day 16–17 needs compounding defenses and economy:
- Continuous daytime digging with upgraded shovels (toy shovel, rusty shovel, drill) or dynamite craters for loot.
- Converting night kills into generator fuel in multiple small batches.
- Selling gold coins, gold bars, and amethyst at the pawn shop.
- Upgrading the sack — the "massive bag" holds 12 items.
- Stockpiling crafted defenses: auto turrets, metal/spike walls, land mines.
- Checking vendors each morning; stock rotates, so recurring visits are needed for weapons, medkits, and better bags.
What reaching day 50 means
Surviving 50 days qualifies you for the Survivor badge, but the badge threshold itself does not establish an ending or a win. Day counting simply accumulates through the cycle, and no day-50-specific event is part of the game's documented flow. Treat day 50 as a self-set endurance target: keep the fuel loop, defense stockpile, and vendor economy running night after night, and let the day counter — not the story — be your measure of success. Note that no save or checkpoint persistence is confirmed, so plan your session around a continuous run rather than assuming you can resume later.
